Three different component identities
A facepiece, a cartridge and a complete approved assembly are different things. The model table below helps identify the existing links; it does not select protection for a paint, resin, solvent or room.

3M’s 65021 instructions limit DIY/home use to non-harmful environments and distinguish occupational/hazardous use under a respiratory-protection program. The 6502QL product data identifies its silicone seal, medium size and bayonet connection. The 60921 page names compatible 6000, 6500 and 7500 series facepieces and the cartridge’s use restrictions. Check the exact approved assembly and instructions; connector shape alone is insufficient.
Identify the exposure before selecting equipment
Record the exact coating or material, its current safety data sheet, application process and work environment. Water-based does not mean an airbrush produces no airborne droplets. A task label such as “resin sanding” is not enough to determine an appropriate filter.
NIOSH distinguishes particle-filtering N95 respirators from gas/vapor protection . The absence of a smell does not establish acceptable exposure. Consult the coating and respirator manufacturers or a qualified safety professional when the required controls are unclear. This guide does not approve indoor spraying or replace an exposure assessment.
Fit and replacement are separate checks
Use the manufacturer’s sizing, fitting, inspection and seal-check instructions. NIOSH distinguishes fit testing from the user seal check performed when putting a respirator on ; facial hair in the sealing area can prevent a tight seal. Do not assume most adults should start with medium, or that changing to another model automatically solves fit. OSHA’s cartridge-change guidance says odor must not be the primary basis for a gas/vapor cartridge service-life schedule. Conditions and exposure matter. Follow the applicable manufacturer’s instructions and protection program; this article supplies no universal replacement interval or smell-based countdown.
