Dremel 8240-5 is a useful shortlist kit when you need a cordless high-speed rotary tool and its basic cutting and sanding accessories match your projects. It is less suitable as an assumed replacement for a slow miniature drill or as a complete kit for every engraving, routing and polishing task.
We checked Dremel’s current US product information, original US kit announcement and 8240 manual on 30 September 2026. We have not cut, sanded, drilled or timed battery use with it. The task-to-accessory budget is original purchasing analysis, not a hands-on performance review.
Identify the five-accessory US kit
The verified Amazon listing identifies 8240-5, with a 2Ah battery, charger, five accessories, wrench and fabric bag. Dremel sells differently named regional and promotional packages, so a larger accessory count in another listing is not evidence of what this box contains.
Dremel’s original US 8240 announcement lists a reinforced cut-off wheel, sanding band and mandrel, additional bands and a screw mandrel among the five accessories. The count includes supporting pieces, not five independent powered functions.
The current US 8240 product record describes the same tool family with a removable 12V 2Ah battery and variable speed from 5,000 to 35,000 RPM. Its Blueprint package suffix differs from the verified 8240-5 route. Use that page for the documented tool characteristics, then verify the selected kit’s own contents.
Speed range changes craft suitability
The US 8240 manual specifies the operating speed range and accessory-fitting requirements. A 5,000-RPM minimum does not meet a requirement for a drill that starts below 1,000 RPM. Maximum speed is not automatically the most appropriate setting for a material or task.

The manual lists collet capacities of 1/32, 1/16, 3/32 and 1/8 inch. That is the supported capacity list, not proof that every collet is included in the chosen kit. Verify the fitted collet and any approved parts needed for your intended shank sizes.

Write down three projects you realistically expect to complete, then identify the specific approved accessory for each material and operation. Avoid buying a huge assortment because every piece appears to fit the shaft.

Accessory fit is more than shank diameter
The manual requires an accessory’s rated speed to meet the selected operating speed and its dimensions to remain within the tool’s capacity. Physical attachment alone does not establish safe use. A drill bit or wheel with a familiar shank can still be unsuitable for the intended operation.
Remove the battery before changing accessories or making adjustments, as the manual requires. Inspect parts and secure the workpiece, with the appropriate protective equipment and dust controls specified for the task. Do not hold a tiny piece in the other hand simply because the tool is small.

Battery and charger ownership
The included 2Ah description is a capacity specification, not a measured number of minutes for your project. Load, accessory, temperature and handling affect the working session. We do not infer usable runtime by copying a no-load comparison or a manufacturer marketing phrase.
The US manual identifies a 120V 60Hz charger. Verify the supplied charger’s rating for the place you intend to use it. A tool’s cordless operation does not make its charger universally compatible with overseas electrical supplies.
Check approved replacement batteries and chargers against the exact current manufacturer’s documentation. Do not extrapolate compatibility from another region’s Dremel page or a shared nominal voltage. Keep battery terminals protected and stop using damaged packs.
Plan the workbench, not just the carry bag
Cordless operation can remove a trailing tool cable during a project. It still needs a safe charging location, appropriate work holding, ventilation and room to handle the accessory. A bag organizes the supplied kit; it does not turn a dining surface into a prepared workshop.

Keep the tool’s cooling openings clear according to its instructions and use the authorized service route for faults. Do not take a quieter-operation marketing description as a measured sound level or a reason to ignore protection requirements.

Consider 8240-5 when the speed range, approved accessories and battery routine fit specific projects, and the complete budget remains sensible. Choose another tool if slow micro-drilling is the main requirement or the selected kit needs so many additions that a different package better fits the work.
